There are secrets to the use of mattress

Yoyo, a 36-year-old housewife

I've been using my mattress for around eight or nine years without realizing it. Recently, I’ve noticed that when I turn over in bed, it makes some noise in certain areas. Still, I thought it was doing pretty well for its age. Now, I’m considering replacing it, but after checking the surface, I don’t see any visible damage. Can I still use it for a little longer?

It's surprising to know that about one-third of our lives is spent sleeping, which makes the importance of a good mattress clear. The role of a mattress in your home goes beyond just what’s under the sheets. While many people understand how crucial a quality mattress is, they often aren't sure how long it should last. Most people decide whether to replace their mattress based on its appearance. In general, high-quality spring mattresses are designed to last around 7 to 10 years. More modern options like memory foam and latex mattresses tend to last longer—usually over 10 years. Some premium brands even claim their mattresses can last up to 20 years, depending on materials and construction. However, this is just an estimate, as various factors can affect a mattress's lifespan.

Even if you plan to replace your mattress within five years, regular maintenance is essential. Two key points are cleaning and even pressure distribution. Make sure to clean your bed covers and sheets regularly. You can also use a vacuum cleaner or a slightly damp cloth to remove dust and hair from the mattress. If there are stains, apply a small amount of soap, then gently press them with a dry cloth or use a hairdryer to dry the area. Never soak or wash the mattress directly, as this can lead to mold growth inside. A mattress can absorb up to 10 liters of sweat and other liquids over time, which may cause wear and staining. It’s also a good idea to have professionals do periodic de-mite treatments to extend the life of your mattress.

Many people are aware of the importance of rotating their mattress. For the first six months after buying a new one, it’s recommended to rotate it once a month, either side-to-side or front-to-back. After that, flipping it every three months is ideal. Even if the mattress claims it’s safe to sleep directly on it, adding a thin layer like a pad or blanket can help protect the inner layers from stains and reduce direct contact between your skin and the mattress fabric. Sitting on the edge of the mattress for long periods can cause uneven stress on the springs, and kids jumping on it can significantly shorten its lifespan. Avoid folding or bending the mattress, and don’t place heavy weight on the same spot repeatedly.

How do you know when it's time to replace your mattress? It's simple: if you no longer feel supported while sleeping, or if you wake up with pain or stiffness, that’s a sign. Also, if the surface is damaged, worn, or the mattress has sunk or become lumpy, it’s time to consider a replacement. Excessive squeaking is another red flag. When I visited several mattress stores at Hongmi Macalline in Xiangmi Lake, I found that different brands have different opinions on mattress lifespan. One salesperson from Yalan said their mattress could last up to 20 years, while a Shuda representative claimed a maximum of 10 years. Another store, Musi, suggested replacing it every five years, even if there’s no visible damage, because of the buildup of harmful substances like dust mites that can affect your health and sleep quality.

The recommended lifespan of a mattress isn’t always set in stone. It varies depending on the materials used, the manufacturing process, and individual usage habits. How you treat your mattress greatly affects its longevity. So, take care of it, and it will serve you well for years to come.
