In recent years, with a growing focus on labor protection across the country, the number of outstanding domestic labor protection companies has significantly increased. The question remains: can these local brands stand up to international competitors? To address this, the Labor Safety Professional Committee of the China Safety Production Association conducted the Top 50 Labor Protection Enterprises and Product User Satisfaction Survey in the second half of 2013.
The survey results revealed that domestic labor protection products have experienced rapid development and are now competitive with global counterparts. According to Liu Xurong, Secretary General of the Labor Protection Committee, the top 50 companies were selected from over 1,000 labor protection product firms nationwide. Unlike other assessments, this selection process was free from any form of financial influence or bias.
The committee adhered to strict principles: no fees were charged to participating companies, there was no requirement for special safety certifications, and membership in the committee was not a prerequisite for participation. Instead, the main criterion was the company's average sales over the past three years. This transparent approach ensured credibility and eliminated any suspicion of favoritism or lobbying.
The results challenged common perceptions about domestic manufacturers. While Honeywell Life Safety Group from the U.S. took the top spot, more than 20 of the following companies were Chinese. For example, Zhejiang Seine Group, Hebi Feihe Co., Ltd., and Zhejiang Blue Sky Garment Co., Ltd. all ranked highly. Shanghai Shima Footwear, at 18th place, reported nearly 100 million yuan in annual sales last year. Several top companies achieved sales exceeding 100 million yuan or even hundreds of millions.
Surprisingly, only three foreign companies made it into the top 50, with one in first place, another around the 20th position, and the third further down the list. From a product perspective, many of the top companies produce items like safety shoes, protective clothing, and workwear, some of which are exported internationally.
Geographically, the majority of top companies are based in Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, with about ten each. In contrast, only one company from Shaanxi made the list, while no enterprises from the western region were selected.
Customer satisfaction surveys showed that most of the top 50 companies received positive feedback. Chen Hong, Chairman of Guangzhou Overseas Chinese Friendship Special Supply Co., Ltd., noted that domestic companies have started to pay more attention to brand building—a significant improvement. However, he emphasized the need for greater confidence in promoting Chinese brands.
