First, make sure you're fully prepared before starting the waterproofing process. Begin by inspecting the wall surface thoroughly. The base should be smooth and free from defects such as hollow spots, sanding, or cracks. A clean and solid surface is essential for proper adhesion of the waterproof material.
Second, choose the right materials. For waterproofing, it's best to use a coating film material that meets current national standards. Always check that the product comes with a valid certificate of quality to ensure its reliability and performance.
Third, follow standard construction procedures. First, the waterproof layer should extend from the floor up the walls, at least 30 cm above the ground. On bathroom walls, the height should be no less than 180 cm to provide full protection against moisture.
Apply the waterproof coating in multiple layers—more than two times—rather than trying to apply it too thickly. Ensure that the cement mortar leveling layer is well bonded to the base, without any hollow spots, cracks, or uneven surfaces. Rounded corners are also important for better waterproofing performance.
The coating should be applied evenly, with a thickness of at least 1.5 mm as specified by the manufacturer. Avoid exposing the edges of the coating. If using construction joints, overlap them in the direction of water flow, with a minimum lap width of 100 mm. When applying more than one layer of fiberglass cloth, ensure the upper layer overlaps the lower one by half.
The final coating should be smooth, without bubbles, drips, or bumps. All pipe fittings, fixtures, floor drains, and drainage joints must be tightly sealed with rounded heads to prevent leaks. Finally, the protective cement mortar layer must meet design specifications in terms of strength and thickness, and care must be taken not to damage the waterproof layer during installation.
Fourth, perform a water test. After applying the waterproofing material, conduct a 24-hour water-sealing test. Fill the area with water to a depth of at least 2 cm at the highest point, then keep it sealed for 24 hours. If there’s no leakage, the job is done correctly. Otherwise, you’ll need to redo it. Never skip this step—it’s crucial for long-term waterproofing success.
