**Cost-effective automated machine tools offer efficient solutions**
Dongfeng Nissan’s strong position in the passenger car market and the intense competition in the industry mean that their requirements for production equipment are both high and carefully considered. “We first contacted EMAG in 2011, and since then, we decided to use EMAG’s laser welding equipment mainly because of its excellent cost-performance,†recalled Mr. Gao Zhenghao.
It was eventually decided to go with EMAG’s ELC 160 machine tool, which is used for press fitting, welding, and flaw detection of three gears—JR1, JR2, and JR4. The welding diameters are 61.565 mm (for the 1/2 gear) and 55.985 mm (for the 4 gear), using materials such as 20MC5 and 27MC5. The design requires a cycle time of 0.85 minutes, but the actual cycle time has been reduced to 0.7 minutes. Currently, the overall equipment efficiency reaches 90%.
Mr. Gao explained, “Before choosing EMAG’s machine tools, our main challenge was how to perform press fitting, welding, and flaw detection on a single piece of equipment. Previously, we were considering purchasing three separate machines for each process.†He added, “EMAG’s solution perfectly addressed our problem.â€
In the welding of the first gear, for example, the ELC 160 machine tool functioned as a multi-purpose unit, significantly reducing costs. It not only cut down on capital investment and floor space, but also reduced labor input by 0.5 employees per shift. Additionally, the machine achieved high-quality welding by properly selecting interference, welding power, and speed ratio. There was no need for post-welding turning, saving time and improving production efficiency.

The ELC 160 integrates workpiece loading/unloading systems and the laser welding process, using CNC joint stamping technology to press the coupling body. All quality-related parameters are controlled by CNC and can be restored. During welding, the CNC system automatically identifies the welding object, and during testing, it performs one-to-one inspections of different workpieces. This results in a highly automated production process, lowering labor costs while ensuring high efficiency and product quality.
