Lycoris (Manzhu Shahua) is a versatile plant that can be grown in open fields, greenhouses, potted containers, or even in hydroponic systems. It thrives in indirect light and does not tolerate strong sunlight. While it doesn't require rich soil, it prefers slightly acidic, well-draining sandy soil that's loose and breathable. Lycoris is a southern plant by nature, so it’s important to mimic its natural environment for optimal growth.

Lycoris is highly adaptable and goes dormant during certain seasons. In northern regions, it's best to grow it in pots. If planted at the end of May, it should bloom successfully. The ideal planting time in the north is during spring, between April and May. Most varieties prefer a warm climate, with temperatures around 24°C and not exceeding 30°C. Lycoris can survive winter if the average temperature stays above 8°C, and even down to 1°C without significant damage. However, overwatering can cause root rot, so it's important to water only when necessary.
For propagation, small bulbs around the main bulb can be separated and used for new plants. The main bulb should be cleaned and dried for two days before planting. When planting, ensure the top of the bulb is just above the soil surface. Potted plants usually take about three years to mature and bloom. For large bulbs (with a diameter of 7 cm or more), they can be planted individually or grouped together in larger pots. Plant them shallowly, keeping the bulb 1/3 to 1/2 exposed to air. Water lightly after planting, and keep the soil slightly moist. Apply liquid fertilizer every two weeks. Once the leaves become thick and mature in autumn, reduce watering.
After 2–3 months, when the plant starts growing, you can repot it or change the potting mix. A good mix consists of 2 parts peat, 2 parts garden soil, and 1 part perlite, along with some base fertilizer. During the summer dormancy period, water less frequently, but keep the soil slightly moist in spring and autumn. Fertilize once every two weeks during the growing season. Lycoris prefers partial shade, especially in summer, and should be kept in semi-shady areas during spring and autumn. Watering should be strictly controlled in winter, and no fertilization is needed during this time.
After flowering, it's important to cut off the spent blooms to conserve energy. Lycoris is generally easy to care for, but it can be affected by diseases like anthracnose and bacterial soft rot. To prevent these, soak the bulbs in a 0.3% copper sulfate solution for 30 minutes before planting, then rinse and dry them. Apply a 500x dilution of 50% carbendazim WP every two weeks. In early stages of disease, use a 2500x dilution of 50% benzoate solution.
Common pests include:
1. **Caterpillars (Spodoptera)**: These larvae feed on leaves, buds, and fruits. Control with 5% Regent suspension diluted 2500 times or 10,000 Ling 1000 times.
2. **Lycoris Radiata**: Larvae feed on leaves and bulbs, causing damage. Look for eggs on the underside of leaves and remove them immediately. Use 1500x Phoxim and 800x Emulsifier during early morning or evening when larvae are active.
3. **Thrips**: These pests feed on bulbs and leaves, causing chlorosis. Use 25% Imidacloprid 3000x or 70% Emerald 6000–10000x for control.
4. **Fungus Gnats**: Treat promptly with phoxim or trichlorfon.
