Water flushing is a common and widely used method in large and medium-sized pig farms for waste management. This technique was introduced to China in the 1980s as part of modern pig farming technology and practices from abroad. In this system, water is sprayed through high-pressure nozzles into the manure channels located beneath the floor slats. The initial investment for a water flushing system is typically included during the construction phase. No additional costs are incurred for the manure collection system itself. At least three sewage pumps are usually needed for an effective system. Labor costs are minimal due to the automated nature of the process.
After the initial setup, the next step involves solid-liquid separation, which requires a space of about 50 square meters. A screw-type separator, such as the LJG-1 model, is commonly used, costing around ¥90,000. This equipment helps separate solid waste from liquid, making it easier to manage and treat the waste.
Operating expenses mainly include water, electricity, and maintenance. Each pig consumes approximately 20–25 liters of water daily for flushing. Electricity is primarily used for running the nozzles and the sewage pumps. Maintenance costs are estimated at around ¥3,000 per month, depending on local market conditions.
One of the key advantages of the water flushing method is that it significantly reduces the workload for farm workers, improves hygiene, and creates a healthier environment for both pigs and staff. It is especially beneficial in areas where labor is scarce.
However, there are also several disadvantages. The system uses a large amount of water—up to 200–250 cubic meters per day for a 10,000-pig farm. The wastewater generated has a high concentration of pollutants, with COD levels ranging from 11,000 to 13,000 mg/L, BOD between 5,000 and 6,000 mg/L, and suspended solids (SS) from 17,000 to 20,000 mg/L. Even after solid-liquid separation, the remaining liquid still contains a significant amount of organic matter and nutrients, making it challenging to treat effectively. The separated solids have low nutrient content and limited fertilizer value.
Although the technology is not highly complex and is not affected by weather changes, the infrastructure and energy costs associated with wastewater treatment can be quite high. Despite these challenges, the water flushing system remains a popular choice in many large-scale pig farming operations due to its efficiency and ease of use.
