Lycoris (Manzhu Shahua) is a versatile plant that can be grown in open fields, greenhouses, potted containers, or even in hydroponic systems. It thrives in indirect light and prefers a gentle, diffused sunlight rather than direct exposure to strong sun. While it doesn't require highly specific soil conditions, it does prefer slightly acidic, well-draining, and sandy soil for optimal growth. The plant is known for its year-round ornamental value, with striking foliage and flowers that appear at different times of the year.

Lycoris is highly adaptable, especially when it comes to bulb dormancy. In colder northern regions, it's best grown in pots. If planted in late May, it should bloom by summer. The ideal planting time in the north is during spring, between April and May. Most varieties thrive in warm climates where temperatures stay around 24°C, with a maximum of 30°C. Lycoris can survive winter temperatures as low as 1°C, provided the soil isn’t too wet. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to water only when necessary.
For propagation, small bulbs around the main bulb can be separated and used for breeding. The main bulb’s roots should be trimmed and allowed to dry for two days before planting. When placing the bulb in the soil, make sure the top is just above the surface. Potted plants usually take three years to mature and produce large blooms (with a diameter of at least 7 cm). You can plant one large bulb in a pot or group 3–4 bulbs in a larger container. Plant shallowly, ensuring the bulb is about one-third to half exposed. Water lightly after planting, keeping the soil slightly moist. Apply liquid fertilizer every two weeks. Once the leaves become thick and mature in autumn, you can reduce watering.
After 2–3 months of growth, repot or refresh the soil. A good mix consists of 2 parts peat, 2 parts garden soil, and 1 part perlite, along with some base fertilizer. During the summer dormancy period, water sparingly, while maintaining consistent moisture in spring and autumn. Fertilize once every two weeks during the growing season. Lycoris prefers semi-shade, especially in summer, and should be kept away from direct sunlight. In winter, reduce watering and stop fertilizing completely.
After flowering, cut back the spent blooms to conserve energy. Common diseases include anthracnose and bacterial soft rot. To prevent these, soak the bulbs in a 0.3% copper sulfate solution for 30 minutes before planting, then rinse and dry. Apply a 500x dilution of 50% carbendazim WP every two weeks. In early disease stages, use a 2500x dilution of 50% benzoate.
Pests such as Spodoptera larvae, Lycoris radiata, thrips, and aphids can also affect Lycoris. For Spodoptera larvae, use 5% Regent suspension diluted 2500 times or 10,000 Ling 1000 times. For Lycoris radiata, remove eggs and larvae manually, and spray 1500x Pharmacy and 800x phoxim emulsifier during morning or evening hours. Thrips can be controlled using 25% imidacloprid 3000x or 70% Emerald 6000–10000x solutions. For aphids, apply phoxim or trichlorfon promptly upon detection.
To ensure healthy growth, maintain proper soil drainage, avoid overwatering, and provide suitable light conditions. With proper care, Lycoris will reward you with beautiful blooms and vibrant foliage throughout the year.
