The United Kingdom has introduced an innovative type of exterior paint designed to break down harmful substances in the air. As part of a pilot project, this eco-friendly paint will be widely used in Italy starting in March. The paint, developed by Millennium Chemicals, is capable of absorbing and decomposing nitrogen oxide—a common pollutant found in vehicle emissions and soot from fossil fuel combustion.
At the core of this new coating is a 30-nanometer-thick layer of titanium dioxide. When exposed to sunlight, the titanium dioxide absorbs ultraviolet rays, generating electric charges that oxidize nitrogen oxide on its surface, converting it into nitric acid. This acid is then either neutralized by calcium carbonate particles embedded in the coating or washed away naturally by rainwater.
This breakthrough in sustainable building materials marks a significant step forward in reducing urban air pollution. By integrating such technology into building exteriors, cities can actively contribute to cleaner air and a healthier environment. The potential for widespread adoption of this paint highlights the growing role of green chemistry in modern construction.
