In recent years, underfloor heating has become increasingly popular in Hangzhou, even though the city is located in the south of China, where central heating is not traditionally common. Despite the cold winter temperatures, many people are now considering installing this system to enjoy a warm and comfortable living environment. Even with snow falling outside, it's not uncommon to see people walking barefoot on heated floors once the room temperature rises above 20°C. While the warmth is tempting, it comes with hidden dangers—especially when it comes to indoor air quality. Zhang Tao, a home renovation designer, has noticed a growing trend in floor heating installations. He has been working on several projects, and more than 20% of his clients have opted for underfloor heating in recent years. “It’s becoming more accepted,” he says. “People who come from the north, especially those who are used to colder winters, are more likely to install it.” Another key factor driving demand is location. People living near rivers or on hillsides tend to be more affected by wind and humidity, making them more inclined to choose floor heating. Zhang Tao recalls a customer who lived near the Third Bridge. At first, she didn’t consider installing it, but her mother, who lived nearby, insisted. “She said it was too cold during winter, and that the floor heating made a big difference,” he explains. Wu Cheng, an engineer at Zhejiang Geiger Heating Technology Co., Ltd., also notes the rising popularity of underfloor heating. Many newly built homes in Hangzhou now come equipped with this system, including developments like Liuzhuang and Xixi Chengyuan. His company has seen a surge in demand, especially as more homeowners look for alternatives to traditional air conditioning. One of the biggest advantages of floor heating is its efficiency. Unlike air conditioners, which can struggle to provide consistent warmth, underfloor heating offers a more even and comfortable temperature throughout the room. However, there are still concerns about installation costs and long-term maintenance. The initial investment can be quite high. A boiler alone can cost over 10,000 yuan, and the piping can range from 120 to 180 yuan per square meter. For a 100-square-meter apartment, the total installation cost could reach 20,000 yuan. This makes it more accessible to families with higher economic status. Another major concern is the potential for indoor pollution. When underfloor heating is turned on, the heat can cause formaldehyde from flooring materials to release more quickly. Gu Gong from Hangzhou Campanula Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. has conducted numerous indoor air tests and found that formaldehyde levels often spike once the floor is warmed. “The boiling point of formaldehyde is around 19.5°C, so any temperature above that can accelerate its release,” he explains. To reduce this risk, experts recommend using high-quality materials and treating the flooring before installation. Some companies now offer real wood flooring that doesn’t require glue, which can help minimize formaldehyde emissions. Additionally, some homeowners choose ceramic tiles instead of wooden floors, as they are safer and conduct heat more efficiently. Despite the benefits, many still hesitate due to the high costs and the fear of long-term maintenance issues. However, with advancements in technology and increased awareness, underfloor heating is gradually becoming a more viable option for southern households looking to stay warm and comfortable during the winter months.
