Monstera cultivation techniques

Monstera is a plant that thrives in shady conditions and should be kept away from direct sunlight. After being moved out of the house in early May, it's best to place it under a grapevine trellis or near a tree by the riverside. In the morning before 9 AM and in the late afternoon after 6 PM, you can expect to see scattered sunlight, which is ideal for this plant. The leaves of Monstera have a strong phototropic tendency, so they should always face the light source to maintain an even and healthy growth. By the end of October, potted plants should be brought indoors, where they should receive sufficient light during midday without being exposed to harsh sunlight. Indoor temperatures should not drop below 10°C, and the leaves should be kept clean regularly to support photosynthesis and enhance their appearance. Monstera prefers a consistently moist environment but is sensitive to overwatering. If the soil becomes waterlogged, the roots may rot, leading to stunted growth, drooping leaves, and a dull appearance. Watering should follow the "wet but not soggy" principle—keep the soil moist, but avoid standing water. During spring and autumn, water every two to three days, while in summer, water once daily between 2 PM and 4 PM. The amount of water depends on the soil's moisture level, and it’s better to water from the bottom to ensure even absorption. In winter, reduce watering frequency to about once every seven days. To maintain humidity, mist the soil and foliage several times a day during the growing season. However, avoid misting during the hottest part of the day in summer, as this can cause leaf burn. Monstera has a higher nutrient requirement compared to many other flowering plants. Along with the base fertilizer (one-third of the soil), apply a diluted liquid fertilizer every 10 days from May to October, during its active growth period. You can use mixtures such as compost tea, horse manure, bean cake, or fish emulsion. Dilute the solution well and apply it every two to three days at a concentration of around 5%. This ensures steady and healthy growth. The large leaves of Monstera require proper support when first planted. A frame should be set up to help shape the plant. Once the structure is established, the frame can be removed, but keep the plant at a distance from surrounding objects to allow the leaves to grow freely. When keeping Monstera indoors, ensure good air circulation to prevent pests like scale insects. Regular monitoring and proper care will help maintain the plant’s health and beauty throughout the year.
