(Tonight's reporter Liu Bo) Wooden furniture has always been a popular choice among consumers due to its natural beauty and durability. Cao Jianyu, an expert from the city's furniture association, explained that wooden furniture can be broadly categorized into three main types: solid wood furniture, wood-based panel furniture, and comprehensive furniture.

Solid Wood Furniture

Solid wood furniture is typically made from solid wood boards and sawn timber, with the exception of the mirror back and beading. The surface is usually finished with varnish, and the main components are made entirely of solid wood without any additional surface layers. In contrast, solid wood veneer furniture uses defective solid wood materials but covers them with a layer of real wood veneer or thin wood. This type offers a more affordable option while still maintaining the look of solid wood.

Wood-Based Panel Furniture

This category includes furniture made primarily from wood-based panels such as particleboard, MDF, or plywood. These panels are often covered with veneer, wood grain paper, or melamine for a more attractive finish. While not as durable as solid wood, wood-based panel furniture is cost-effective and widely used in both office and home settings.

Comprehensive Furniture

Comprehensive furniture combines solid wood and wood-based panel materials, often incorporating other elements like metal or glass. It offers a mix of aesthetics and functionality, standing out from traditional solid wood or panel-based designs.

Cao Jianyu offered five key tips for buyers when purchasing wooden furniture:

1. Check the materials: Look at the grain pattern on the front, end, and back of the wood. Solid wood has a consistent and natural grain, while the surface of veneered or panel products may appear artificial. Tap the surface – solid wood sounds crisp and clear, while wood-based panels sound dull. Also, smell the furniture. Solid wood should have a subtle, natural scent, while low-quality panels may emit a strong chemical odor.

2. Inspect the structure: Ensure the furniture is well-constructed and sturdy. For example, test the stability of a large wardrobe by pushing it gently. If it doesn't wobble or twist, it's likely well-made and structurally sound.

3. Evaluate the craftsmanship: High-quality furniture should have smooth, even finishes with no color variations or defects. All joints should be tight, and drawers should slide smoothly without sticking. The edges of wood-based panel furniture must be sealed properly to prevent chipping or peeling.

4. Assess the environment: A safe and high-quality product should not have a strong, irritating smell. New furniture might have a slight paint-like odor, which usually fades after time. However, if the smell is strong and persistent, it could indicate the use of harmful or non-environmentally friendly materials.

5. Review the documentation: Always check for clear labels and user instructions. Don’t forget to ask for the product manual, which can provide important information about maintenance and care.
