Does your mobile CAD really fit iOS 7?

iOS 7 has been available worldwide for two months now. This new Apple mobile operating system has brought significant improvements in functionality, while also undergoing a complete visual overhaul. The long-standing "material design" approach was completely abandoned in favor of a "flat" style—removing elements like shadows, gradients, and textures that once defined the look of iOS. Instead, it features simple colors, abstract layouts, and clean icons, aiming to reduce visual clutter and let users focus more on content rather than interface design, making the user experience more comfortable and intuitive. Despite initial complaints from some users who felt the new design lacked the "Apple flavor" or didn't work as smoothly, the upgrade rate for iOS 7 reached over 75% within just two months. This strong adoption rate shows that the flat design and functional upgrades are gaining widespread acceptance. Major app developers have also released iOS 7-specific versions to ensure compatibility and provide a consistent user experience with the new system. As a designer, you might be wondering if your CAD application is truly optimized for iOS 7. Today, we’re taking a closer look at one of the first CAD apps fully designed for iOS 7: CAD Touch V1.3. **The First Big Change in iOS 7: A New Interface Style** One of the most noticeable changes in iOS 7 is its clean, minimalistic interface. It eliminates unnecessary visual effects, reducing distractions and allowing users to focus on what matters. To truly support this new design, apps must be developed using iOS 7-specific tools. That’s where CAD Touch comes in. From the start, it was built with iOS 7 in mind, giving it a genuine, native feel. Many so-called “iOS 7 compatible” apps are just updated versions that run on the new OS without adopting the new design language, resulting in a “pseudo-adaptation.” ![Figure 1] The main interface of CAD Touch now reflects the clean and modern iOS 7 style. **The Second Big Change: Redesigned Flat Icons** To match the flat design, icons had to be reimagined. CAD Touch worked with professional designers to create a set of minimalist, flat icons that are not only visually appealing but also easier on the eyes and more recognizable. Even the text labels under icons were removed to simplify the interface further. The translucent toolbar allows users to see the drawing underneath, enhancing usability. If an app is truly iOS 7-ready, its interface and icons will reflect this change. ![Figure 2] The minimalist icons and transparent toolbar of the new CAD Touch version. **The Third Big Change: Status Bar Integration** In previous iOS versions, the status bar was always at the top, often clashing with app designs. Developers had to either leave it visible or mask it. With iOS 7, the status bar became transparent, seamlessly blending into the app interface. This makes the user experience more cohesive and efficient. CAD Touch uses this feature to fill the entire screen, maximizing space for designers. In contrast, many other apps simply hide the status bar, which can make it difficult for users to know their device’s status. This small detail reflects how well the app has been optimized for the new system. ![Figure 3] The new transparent status bar in CAD Touch compared to the old version. Beyond these major changes, iOS 7 introduced several other updates that may not be immediately obvious to regular users. For example, the microphone access authorization was updated, which affected apps that relied on voice recording. The older version of CAD Touch had a unique “smart voice” feature, but it no longer worked on iOS 7 due to these changes. However, the new version of CAD Touch has been fully updated to support these changes, allowing users to record annotations directly on their iPad or iPhone. Overall, CAD Touch V1.3 is one of the first CAD applications fully optimized for iOS 7. It supports the new interface and icon style, ensures smooth performance, and offers a consistent user experience. With features like cloud storage, intelligent voice commands, and free DWG viewing, it's definitely a must-have for any designer looking to stay up-to-date with the latest iOS trends.
