Bamboo fiber textile health care is unclear

Bamboo fiber textiles, often praised for their antibacterial, deodorizing, and moisture-absorbing properties, have gained popularity among consumers. However, many merchants also claim additional health benefits such as "anti-ultraviolet," "releasing negative ions," or "blocking radiation." These extra features have sparked doubts among buyers. Experts confirm that bamboo fiber does have antibacterial and deodorizing effects, but many of the so-called health benefits are more marketing hype than scientific fact. Consumers are advised to be cautious and not fall for misleading claims. In the market, bamboo fiber products like underwear, bedding, and curtains are often significantly pricier than their cotton counterparts. For instance, a regular cotton towel may cost 10–20 yuan, while a bamboo fiber towel can go up to 60–70 yuan. A set of bamboo fiber bedding might even reach 2,000 yuan. Salespeople highlight the softness, breathability, and moisture-wicking qualities of these products, along with their ability to inhibit bacteria and reduce odors. Some sellers go further, claiming that bamboo fiber can improve sleep quality, release negative ions, enhance breathing, and even improve skin complexion. One online store, Hengmei Home Textiles, promotes its bamboo fiber bedding with such health benefits. However, many consumers remain skeptical about these exaggerated claims. During an investigation, reporters found that some salespeople confuse bamboo fiber with bamboo charcoal products. A customer named Ms. Wang admitted she believes in the deodorizing effect but questions the health benefits, saying, “I’m not sure if those are real or just marketing.” Not all bamboo fiber is the same. According to Gu Yulu, a senior engineer from Jilin Chemical Fiber Group, true bamboo fiber is smooth, elastic, and has a unique hollow structure that allows it to absorb and evaporate moisture quickly, making it breathable. However, bamboo charcoal fiber is different—it’s made by processing bamboo into nano particles and blending them into other fibers. While this can enhance deodorizing properties, it’s important for consumers to distinguish between the two materials to avoid being misled. Many bamboo fiber products claim to have antibacterial and deodorizing effects, which experts say are largely accurate. However, some products use cotton to mimic bamboo fiber, and consumers should check test results or feel the fabric themselves. Ms. Zhao, who uses bamboo fiber towels, noticed that they last longer without developing odor compared to cotton during rainy seasons. Still, the effectiveness depends on the bamboo fiber content—higher percentages usually mean better performance. Some products boast of containing 70% bamboo fiber and 30% cotton, which is normal in certain designs, like terry cloth towels. However, if a product claims to be 100% bamboo fiber, consumers should be cautious. Not all claims are genuine. Regarding health functions, experts warn that claims like “releasing far infrared rays” or “promoting blood circulation” are mostly marketing tactics. While bamboo fiber does offer UV protection, it’s not as effective as specialized fabrics. The warmth retention is due to its hollow structure, not any heat-emitting properties. When purchasing, consumers should look for reasonable prices—real bamboo fiber towels typically range from 20 to 120 yuan. If something is priced much lower, it might be fake. Also, genuine bamboo fiber products won’t smell strongly of bamboo, as the raw material is processed through multiple steps. For washing, avoid using alkaline water, as it can damage the fiber and reduce its antibacterial properties. Use neutral or slightly acidic water instead. Water temperature should not be too low; warm water helps restore the fabric’s softness after soaking.
