Bamboo fiber textile health care is unclear

Bamboo fiber textiles, often marketed as "anti-bacterial, deodorizing, and moisture-absorbing," have gained popularity among consumers. However, many merchants also claim additional health benefits such as "anti-ultraviolet protection," "releasing negative ions," and "blocking radiation." These extra features have sparked doubts among some buyers. Experts point out that while bamboo fiber does have antibacterial and deodorizing properties, the so-called health functions are mostly marketing gimmicks. Consumers should be cautious and not fall for misleading claims. Bamboo fiber products tend to be significantly more expensive than traditional materials like cotton. For example, a regular cotton towel may cost between 10 to 20 yuan, whereas a bamboo fiber towel can range from 60 to 70 yuan. A four-piece bamboo fiber bedding set might even reach 2,000 yuan. Salespeople often highlight the softness, breathability, and natural antibacterial qualities of these products. Some online shops, like Hengmei Home Textiles on Taobao, go further by claiming that their bamboo fiber bedding can improve sleep quality, enhance breathing, and even promote healthier skin. During an investigation, reporters found that many sellers confuse bamboo fiber with bamboo charcoal products. One customer, Ms. Wang, admitted she wasn’t sure about the health benefits but thought the deodorizing effect was useful. “As for the rest, I’m not sure if it’s just hype,” she said. It's important to understand that not all bamboo fiber products are created equal. According to Gu Yulu, a senior engineer at Jilin Chemical Fiber Group, real bamboo fiber has unique characteristics, including a soft texture, high moisture absorption, and breathability. It is often called "breathing fiber" due to its hollow structure. However, bamboo charcoal fiber is a different material altogether. While both come from bamboo, they are processed differently. Bamboo charcoal fiber is made by turning bamboo into nano particles and blending them into other fibers. This gives it good deodorizing properties, but the effectiveness depends on the concentration of the charcoal in the product. Experts warn that many products falsely claim to be made entirely of bamboo fiber. A label stating "70% bamboo fiber, 30% cotton" is actually normal, as mixing with cotton improves durability. If a product claims to be 100% bamboo fiber, consumers should be skeptical. When it comes to health benefits, most of the claims—like releasing far-infrared rays or blocking electromagnetic radiation—are exaggerated. While bamboo fiber does offer UV protection, the effect is minimal unless specifically designed for that purpose. The heat retention is due to its hollow structure, not any special thermal properties. Price is another key factor. Real bamboo fiber products usually cost between 20 to 120 yuan. Anything cheaper than 20 yuan is likely fake. Also, genuine bamboo fiber shouldn't smell strongly of bamboo, as the processing removes that scent. For proper care, avoid using alkaline detergents, as they can damage the fiber and reduce its antibacterial properties. Use neutral or slightly acidic water instead. Also, don’t wash with very cold water; warm water helps maintain the fabric’s softness. After washing, the antibacterial function can be restored naturally through body sweat. If you're looking to buy bamboo fiber products, visit reputable stores, touch the fabric, and check the label carefully. Be wary of unrealistic claims and always compare prices and quality before making a purchase.
