What about flame retardant furniture in the furniture market?

In recent years, there have been numerous fire incidents across different regions, resulting in significant damage to lives and property. These tragic events have forced people to pay closer attention to home safety. Many furniture products now claim to have flame-retardant properties. However, the Furniture Network has learned that while flame-retardant furniture is widely available, the actual effectiveness of these claims remains questionable. In everyday home life, furniture can be one of the fastest contributors to the spread of a fire. According to reports, many sofas on the market are labeled as flame-retardant. Some sales representatives claim that their furniture is imported from abroad, with leather and foam materials that have inherent flame-retardant properties, which can significantly slow down the spread of flames. High-end sofas often use flame-retardant foam, but not all products live up to their promises. In reality, many sofas are filled with synthetic materials like polyurethane foam. This material contains two to three times more energy than natural materials, making it more prone to ignite quickly and cause flashovers during a fire. In homes where natural materials were previously used, people had an average of 17 minutes to escape after a fire started. Today, that time has dropped to just three minutes due to the increased flammability of synthetic fillers. The Furniture Network also found that for wooden furniture, if the flame-retardant paint on the surface is ineffective, it may actually accelerate combustion and release toxic fumes. Industry experts emphasize that flame-retardant furniture doesn’t provide absolute protection, but rather aims to delay the spread of fire, giving people more time to escape or for firefighters to respond. A recent study from Duke University in the U.S. warned that some flame retardants in sofa foam—like brominated compounds—may increase cancer risk, disrupt hormone levels, and affect brain development in children. Researchers have found that these chemicals can leach into the environment and accumulate in living organisms over time. They have also been linked to endocrine disruption, thyroid issues, and potential harm to fetal brain development, especially when pregnant women are exposed. Experts recommend using phosphorus-based flame retardants instead of brominated ones for household items like sofas, curtains, and wallpapers. When purchasing furniture, it's better to choose natural fabrics like linen or wool, as they have natural flame-resistant qualities. If you're concerned about brominated flame retardants, keeping your home well-ventilated and adding plants like orchids, which can help absorb harmful chemicals, may reduce their negative impact.
