Research and development of new electrolyte can greatly reduce the lithium ion battery charging time

Lithium-ion batteries have excellent performance, but long charging times are a challenge. Researchers at the University of Tokyo in Japan have developed a new lithium-ion battery electrolyte that can reduce charging time by more than two-thirds.

According to Japan's "Sankei Shimbun" website reported on the 30th, lithium-ion battery charge and discharge process is through the electrolyte in the lithium ion to move between the positive and negative. The concentration of lithium ions in the new electrolyte is extremely high, which is more than four times that of ordinary lithium-ion batteries. Lithium ions can move at high speed in this high-concentration environment, and the time for one charge is less than one-third that of ordinary lithium-ion batteries.

Because of the problem of the electrolyte's voltage resistance, the lithium-ion battery voltage is usually limited to about 4 volts, and the new electrolyte can be stably charged at voltages above 5 volts. Researchers believe that the voltage of lithium-ion batteries can also be greatly increased.

The head of research, University of Tokyo professor Yukio Yamada, said that although this technology is simple, it is expected to improve the convenience of using lithium-ion batteries.
