At the 6th Standing Committee of the 7th China Leather Association and the 2014 National Local Leather Association Working Conference, held on April 22, speakers and participants from across the industry discussed various challenges and the urgent need for transformation and upgrading within the Chinese leather sector. Yu Yongchang, chairman of the Shandong Leather Association, provided an overview of the performance of the Shandong leather industry in 2013 and outlined key development priorities for 2014. He highlighted several critical issues, including an unbalanced industrial structure, limited capacity for independent innovation, and a weak information infrastructure. In response, he proposed targeted measures and summarized key recommendations and appeals aimed at addressing these challenges.
Yu Yongchang emphasized that enterprises above the designated size must accelerate their transformation and upgrade processes. He encouraged leveraging the integration of technology and industry to enhance efficiency and continue refining cost management strategies. With the shift of the safety shoe production industry due to rising labor and cost factors, he believed that the safety footwear sector could become a strong pillar of Shandong’s shoe industry. At the same time, companies should focus on expanding both international and domestic markets, improving sales networks, investing in environmental protection, and promoting a circular economy model to ensure sustainable growth.
In light of the current stagnation or decline in leather exports, Yu Yongchang expressed hope that the government would provide stronger policy support. He called for improvements in the market financing system, increased investment in personnel training, talent recruitment, and technological innovation within the manufacturing sector. Encouraging continuous technological investment and supporting the development of professional associations were also seen as crucial steps. He pointed out that the current functions of these associations are often limited and urged faster operations to fully realize their potential in driving the industry toward healthy and orderly development.
