First, the stone binder construction method:
1. Base Treatment: Before applying the adhesive, make sure to thoroughly clean the surface by removing any grease, dust, or loose particles. There's no need to wet the base layer or the facing material, but the bonding surface of the tile should remain clean and free from contaminants.
2. Adhesive Preparation: Mix the binder with water in a ratio of approximately 4:1 (by weight) and stir until you achieve a smooth, workable slurry. Let it rest for about 10 minutes so that the mixture becomes slightly thicker. After this time, stir it again before use. The slurry can be restored to its original consistency if needed. It is generally not necessary to add more water during the second mixing.
3. Application Method: Use a trowel or a notched scraper to apply the adhesive to the base surface. Then press or gently move the stone or decorative materials onto the adhesive. Alternatively, apply the slurry to the back of the tiles and then place them on the wall, ensuring they are properly aligned and level. Remove any excess adhesive after pressing.
4. Waiting Period: Allow the adhesive to cure for at least 24 hours before proceeding with any further steps or placing heavy objects on the surface.
Second, important precautions when using stone adhesive:
1. Always use clean water—such as tap water—for mixing the adhesive. Avoid using any contaminated or impure water sources.
2. Do not add any other substances or additives while preparing the adhesive. This ensures the integrity and performance of the product.
3. Once mixed, the adhesive should be used within 2 hours. Beyond that, its effectiveness may decrease significantly.
4. Do not treat the stone’s bonding surface with regular protective agents before installation, as this could lead to poor adhesion and potential detachment. Instead, consider using AD2009 waterproof adhesive, which offers both strong bonding and protection against stains and moisture.
5. Ensure the construction temperature is above 5°C. In colder conditions, you can warm the surface slightly to improve adhesion and curing.
6. If there are chemical residues or oil stains on the stone surface, clean them thoroughly and allow the stone to dry completely before application.
7. Apply an appropriate amount of adhesive. If the temperature is low, less adhesive is needed, and the curing time will be longer. Conversely, higher temperatures may reduce the usable time of the adhesive.
8. Never mix tools between different batches of adhesive. Also, do not return unused adhesive back into the original container. Avoid moving the tiles or stones until the adhesive is fully cured.
9. In winter, if the adhesive becomes too thick, you can place the A component in a 40–80°C water bath to reduce its viscosity. However, make sure to cool it down to below 40°C before adding the B component (curing agent).
10. Any excess adhesive that is not yet cured can be reused on other stone surfaces, provided it remains in good condition.
11. Due to the varying physical and chemical properties of different types of stone, always perform a small test first to ensure compatibility. Keep the container sealed tightly and avoid exposing it to moisture or air.
12. Follow the recommended usage guidelines for the adhesive. Use the entire batch within the specified time frame. The more adhesive you prepare, or the higher the ambient temperature, the shorter the usable window will be.
