Introduction to the Construction Process of Xiaoqingwa Tiles
Xiaoqingwa, also known as butterfly tiles, are a type of interlocking roof tile that feature an arched cross-section and a narrow planar shape. These small green tiles have been widely used in traditional Chinese roofing projects for centuries. However, the construction of Xiaoqingwa requires careful attention to detail and specific techniques to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal.
The process begins with determining the ridge pattern based on the roof's design. Once the layout is set, the roof is prepared by laying the base layer. Then, the small green tiles are arranged according to the slope of the roof, taking into account the number of turns and the spacing between each tile. The tiling is typically done from the eaves upward toward the ridge, ensuring a neat and uniform finish.
The steps involved in the finishing process include: inspecting the base layer, preparing the tiles, stacking them properly, laying the roof tiles, applying the gable waterline, and finally checking and cleaning the area. Each step must be carried out with precision to maintain the integrity of the roof structure.
The sequence for laying Xiaoqingwa tiles follows a left-to-right, bottom-to-top approach. It is crucial to prepare the roof surface thoroughly before starting the tiling process, as this ensures better adhesion and stability. This method differs from standard tile roofing practices, where tiles are often laid after the roof has been fully prepared.
There are generally three common methods for constructing the roof ridge. One involves placing the Xiaoqingwa tiles along the entire length of the gable, while another uses diagonal placement to create a tight, seamless ridge. The most commonly used technique is to lay two flat tile heads on either side of the gable and then symmetrically place the Xiaoqingwa tiles from both sides toward the center. This method is preferred due to its efficiency and visual appeal, and it may vary depending on regional traditions and building purposes.
When dealing with intersections such as vertical chimneys or skylights on the roof, special attention must be given to waterproofing. The waterline should be carefully placed so that it extends at least 50mm beyond the edge of the chimney or skylight. The tiling around these areas should follow the same pattern as the rest of the roof, ensuring a clean, straight, and tightly sealed finish that meets the design specifications and prevents leaks.
