China's first reusable liquid oxygen methane rocket engine full system test run was successful

On May 17, China's first 80-ton liquid oxygen methane engine "Tianque" (TQ-12) was successfully tested in 20 seconds. This type of engine was independently developed by Blue Arrow Aerospace.

According to reports, "Sky Magpie" is the world's third large-thrust liquid oxygen methane rocket engine after completing the SpaceX raptor engine and the blue origin BE-4 engine. On the same day, the "Tianque" engine completed the fourth full-system test run, the test run time was 20 seconds, the engine started and shut down smoothly and quickly, the parameters in the normal working section were stable, and the performance of the engine reached the design requirements.

"Tianque" selects methane as the propellant and liquid oxygen as the combustion aid. Its safety is higher than that of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen. Its specific impulse (a parameter describing the efficiency of the engine) is slightly higher than that of liquid oxygen kerosene. The preparation difficulty is much lower than fuel grade kerosene, and there is no carbon deposits and coking at all, which is the best choice for recyclable rockets. Therefore, the liquid oxygen methane engine can achieve high performance, high safety, low cost, easy operation, and reusability. The success of the test run officially announced that the Chinese private enterprise had mastered the key technology of the 100-ton liquid rocket engine for the first time, and possessed the support capabilities required for engine development.

Ge Minghe, general manager of Blue Arrow Aerospace Power R & D Department, said that Blue Arrow Aerospace started the related development work of "Tian Que" engine in 2017, and has completed the tests of gas generator test, short nozzle thrust room test, and semi-system test. The complete process of design, R & D, manufacturing, production, assembly, and testing of high-thrust engines has been gradually advanced. The "Tianque" engine has a vacuum thrust of 80 tons. In the future, the "Suzaku 2" rocket powered by it will have a total thrust of 268 tons. It can send two large SUV cars into space at the same time. It is the twin-cryogenic liquid rocket engine with the largest thrust in China at present.

In terms of the power system design formed by the engine as a unit, Blue Arrow Aerospace chose the "80 + 10" rocket power system technology route. Through the parallel combination of two types of engines, it can cover a full range of rockets from small, medium to large. The success of the whole system test run achieved the complete control of the development capability of Blue Arrow Aerospace's engines from 10 tons to 100 tons and full coverage of the power range.
