The three major operators will set up mobile payment standards with UnionPay

There has been new progress in the selection of China's mobile payment standards. Recently, Xie Yuqi, Director of the Policy and Standards Division of the Department of Communication and Development of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, revealed that in order to further advance the work of mobile payment standards, the People’s Bank of China and three major telecom operators, China UnionPay and other related organizations have held symposiums to discuss mobile payment. Standard issue. This shows that cross-industry and cross-departmental cooperation is advancing the development of the mobile payment industry, and the formulation of standards for mobile payment services has begun.

Xie Yuqi pointed out that the mobile payment service provides consumers with more convenient and secure payment methods on the one hand; in addition, mobile payment as a new business integrated with the communications industry and the financial industry also enriches the business model of bank companies, merchants, and communications operating companies. . Because of this, the financial industry represented by various banks, the telecom industry represented by operators, and other industrial chains are very concerned about this business, and a series of pilot projects have been carried out.

Xie Yuqi also pointed out that while actively promoting mobile payment services, the mobile payment industry still has some problems that require us to work together to study and resolve them. "The most important issue is the standard of mobile payment. If the standard is not uniform, it will be difficult to scale up the industry chain, the cost will not fall, resources will be difficult to share, and the mobile payment business will not develop well."

It is understood that there are currently four major types of mobile payment solutions used in the country: a dual interface card solution based on 13.56 MHz non-contact technology; a non-contact technology (NFC) solution based on 13.56 MHz; and a non-contact SD card based on 13.56 MHz. The program and the 2.4 GHz radio frequency identification smart card (RF-SIM) scheme.

In the telecommunications industry, while China Mobile is mainly developing the 2.4G standard, it will not give up the 13.56 MHz standard; China Telecom will also support the application of 2.4 GHz while taking 13.56 MHz as its main development direction; China Unicom has been in support of 2.4 GHz since 2006. Shanghai and other places respectively conducted the NFC and SIMSIM terminal technology solutions based on the 13.56 MHz standard, and the RFSIM terminal technology solutions based on the 2.4G standard, but mainly based on SIMpass. In addition to telecom operators, UnionPay also introduced payment solutions based on SD cards.

According to industry insiders, all parties in the industry chain want to dominate the mobile payment industry chain. But judging from the current situation, between China Mobile’s 2.4 GHz standard and China UnionPay’s 13.6 MHz standard, it is still unclear who will eventually become the dominant mobile payment standard in China.
