In Merton, a smart trash bin is currently being tested in southwest London. This innovative waste container has the ability to hold up to 8 times more garbage than a standard bin and sends an alert—via email or SMS—when it reaches 85% capacity. Known as the world’s most advanced bin, it's called the "Daweiwang Solar Waste Bin" and is developed by the U.S.-based company "Daweiwang Solar."
From the outside, it looks like a regular black bin with a handle on the front. However, its intelligence comes from a combination of solar panels, a garbage compressor, and a computerized system. Powered by a 12-volt battery pack, it can operate for up to three weeks on a full charge. The battery is recharged by a solar panel that only needs 8 hours of sunlight per month to keep the system running smoothly.
Inside, the bin features a wireless monitoring system that allows waste management teams to track its status in real time using a computer or smartphone. When the bin is nearly full, it automatically sends a notification to the responsible party, helping prevent overflow and mess on the streets.
The bin has a 567-liter capacity, and its built-in compressor can apply 5.3 kilonewtons of pressure, allowing it to compact trash into 6 to 8 times its original volume. Unlike hydraulic systems, this compressor uses a chain drive, which is more durable and less prone to issues.
Users can check the bin's fill level online weekly or monthly. According to a diagram published in the UK’s *Daily Mail*, the system shows the exact location of each bin on a map, along with color-coded indicators (green, yellow, red) showing how much space remains.
According to Daweiwang Solar, the use of these bins can reduce street bins by up to 86%, saving both labor and fuel costs. In Merton, 30 of these bins are being trialed for one year. Although the rental cost is £1,000 per year (around $1,600), the overall savings in waste management expenses could reach up to 70% when factoring in purchase costs, labor, and fuel.
Mark Beitrich, a member of Merton District Council, praised the bins: “They’re amazing. They’ll not only keep our parks cleaner but also make our work more efficient.â€
As summer approaches, he added, “We hope everyone will visit the park. There are diving pools, playgrounds, trails, and picnic areas—plus, these smart bins are part of what makes our community better.â€
