A smart trash bin is currently being tested in Merton, a district in southwest London. This innovative bin, which looks like a regular black waste container, is actually packed with advanced technology. It can hold up to 8 times more garbage than a standard bin and sends an alert—via email or SMS—when it’s 85% full. This feature helps prevent overflow and keeps the streets cleaner.
Known as the "Daweiwang Solar Waste Bin," this high-tech unit is developed by the U.S.-based company Daweiwang Solar. Its intelligence comes from a combination of solar panels, a built-in garbage compressor, and a computerized monitoring system. Powered by a 12-volt battery, it can operate for up to three weeks on a single charge. The solar panel ensures that the system runs smoothly even in varying weather conditions, requiring only 8 hours of sunlight per month to keep the electronics functioning.
The bin's wireless monitoring system allows city workers to track its status in real time using a smartphone or computer. When the bin reaches 85% capacity, it automatically notifies the responsible party, ensuring timely collection and reducing the risk of spills or odors.
With a capacity of 567 liters, the bin uses a chain-driven compressor that exerts 5.3 kilonewtons of pressure, compressing trash to 6–8 times its original volume. This makes it significantly more efficient than traditional bins. Users can check the bin’s fill level online, and the “Earth King Telemetry System†provides visual updates through color-coded indicators—green for low, yellow for medium, and red for full.
According to Daweiwang Solar, implementing these bins can reduce the number of street bins by up to 86%, cutting down on labor costs and the need for frequent garbage truck trips. This not only saves money but also reduces carbon emissions.
While the rental cost for one bin is £1,000 per year (about $1,600), the long-term savings are significant. Merton Council has installed 30 of these bins as part of a one-year trial. Calculations show that, when factoring in purchase costs, labor, and fuel, the overall waste management expenses could drop by up to 70%.
Mark Beitrich, a member of Merton District Council, praised the bins, saying, “They’re amazing. They’ll help keep our parks cleaner and make our work more efficient.â€
As summer approaches, the council hopes more people will visit the park, which offers swimming pools, playgrounds, trails, and picnic areas. With these smart bins in place, the experience will be even more enjoyable for everyone.
