This kind of battery differs from existing lithium batteries in that the electrolytes of ordinary lithium ion batteries or lithium polymer batteries are solid, and the electrolyte of such lithium ion batteries is a muddy black solid-liquid mixture. In the internal structure of the battery, half of the electrolyte "mud" acts as a positive electrode, and the other half of the "slurry" of different components acts as a negative electrode, separated by an ion membrane. To "charge" it is as simple as removing the discharged mud electrolyte and replacing it with a new electrolyte. The entire process takes only a few minutes.

This type of battery combines the advantages of lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries: the electrolyte used is cheaper than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and the “charging time” is also short; the solid-liquid mixed electrolyte is also more portable and corrosive than the pure liquid state of lead-acid batteries. And the acidity is very weak, the unit energy density is also much larger than the lead-acid battery, weight has advantages. It is expected to replace the location of lead-acid batteries in automobiles and promote the development of new electric vehicles, or as a backup power source for power plants. The MIT press office described the application prospect of this kind of battery as a metaphor: “The charging of this kind of battery is as simple, fast and convenient as the refueling of natural gas as a fuel vehicle.”
