According to EurekAlert!: Fazhan Shi and colleagues used a defect in a diamond to detect the electron spin resonance signal of a single protein at room temperature. Like medical MRI, which visualizes tissue in the body, such techniques can help researchers gain a better understanding of the structure and dynamics of all types of biomolecules.
It has been difficult to scale this type of exploration down to the level of a single molecule. Shi and colleagues used a single diamond defect (called the nitrogen vacancy center) as a tiny magnetic detector to observe a portion of the electron spin in the cyclin labeled with nitrogen oxides.
