Among various types of hardwoods, redwood is considered one of the finest. It is dense, heavy, and has a less pronounced grain pattern. When the wood flower of rosewood is placed in white wine, it quickly dissolves into a pink color and forms a sticky gel that can be drawn into a continuous line when poured. This is a reliable method to identify genuine rosewood. Rosewood is primarily sourced from India, as well as regions like Yunnan, Guangdong, and Guangxi in China.
Red sandalwood belongs to the legume family and includes around fifteen species, commonly found in tropical areas. It is typically divided into two main types: small-leaf sandalwood, also known as red sandalwood, and large-leaf sandalwood, often referred to as rosewood. Small-leaf sandalwood rarely produces large pieces, and once the diameter exceeds 20 cm, the wood tends to become hollow and unusable. Its grain is not very visible, with a color ranging from purple to black, sometimes appearing dark and glossy, with little to no texture visible.
In China, the rosewood commonly imported from Africa is generally considered to be the large-leaf variety. Compared to Indian rosewood, which has a reddish hue that deepens over time when handled, African rosewood tends to have a more distinct purple pattern and retains a natural oiliness. On the other hand, African red sandalwood appears very dark, lacks luster, has thick fibers, and develops many "cow hair lines" after drying and shrinking. These patterns are actually caused by uneven shrinkage during the drying process.
It is often said that large-leaf sandalwood is the newer type, while small-leaf is the older one. As the import of new sandalwood becomes increasingly restricted, its price continues to rise, making it a promising investment for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
